Livia

Se potessi

ricominciare o no questo viaggio

ricomincerei.

N. It was a realllllly long lesson about its history composed by different presentations...now we can say that we know everything about Petrobras!
The afternoon was really amazing!!!!!! We went to the so-called Cidade do Samba in Rio, where every samba schools prepare its carro for the most popular carnival in the world. They start working in April in order to have everything ready for this special week and all the samba schools race one against the other in the "sambodromo" to win the rich prize. For this reason the winner have to create the most spectacular and particular carro!
From the Cidade do Samba it's possible to see in the background a big favela...This fact seems a paradox: the extreme sparkle of Carnival on one side and the poverty of the favela on the other...
At night to celebrate the birthday of Gessica we went to the crowded Sao Francisco Bay to eat and drink something and after a quick walk under the moon shadow in the beach, we had even organized a nice surprice in the terrace of the hotel: chocolate cake for everybody!!!

Unfortunately, the dream is quite over and in a few hours we will not see anymore the Cristo Redentore at the horizon.....
Tristeza, alegria...Alegria, tristeza...
...SAUDADE...

Gessica&Vaal Sasci!

The day has finally come: no more time, no more excuses. Some went to Porcao, and some others went back to the hotel and had dinner in a restaurant nearby.

In conclusion, we all enjoyed another amazig day in Brazil and enriched our culture.
Though it's time to go to bed because tomorrow will be our last day of work and a giant of Brazilian economy is waiting for us: PETROBRAS requires our full attention!

The D-day

today is THE day. So many changes has been done, there is someone living the group, there is some others joining us. Early in the morning we got off of the bed in a rush, because we were late…as usual.
Nice coffee had got our eyes and minds well open ready for another exiting Brazilian day! At the classroom the judge Fernanda Duarte was waiting us for a little while, and we were afraid to be judged for our microscopic delay! But nothing rough has happened, on the contrary she was so sweet and informal to teaching us how the training program for federal judge is. Fernanda Duarte has captured our attention by showing all the challenges a wanna-be judge has to withstand, we have learnt that exams will never finish, and sure would make you upset. In fact to be a judge here in Brazil you must pass an exam that proof you got merit to be a judge. But during the lesson here it comes a present, or better still, two presents: here it goes Prof. Fabio Corno and Prof. Diana Cerini!! Later on landing at the international airport of Rio de Janeiro, they attended half a lesson; what a good professors!!!
After a sweet good-bye to Roberto Caimi that left the Winter School, the group has been split into two different brunches; one of them goes to Supreme Court, and the other one stayed here in Niteroi for another interesting lesson upon sustainable eco-tourism in Brazil. Fernando, our tutor that organized the program of the Winter School in Brazil took a lecture on it, focusing on an amazing program that started up an eco-sustainable culture of tourism in AIURUOCA, a zone in Minas Gerais encompassed in the “Área de Proteção Ambiental (APA) da Mantiqueira”.
Also for the people who went to the federal tribunal of Rio de Janeiro this was an amazing afternoon!! Judge Fernanda and other two judges guided us into a impressive tour of the whole court!we even saw a real trial involving man accused of drugs traffic! It was really an experience, expecially for those of us who's not from the law faculty.
After the visit, we met Carlito, our great driver, waiting for us in the van: we had to came back to the hotel to ultimate our homeworks =) and -most important- to fix our plans for the weekend!!!
See you tomorrow guys!!
Marco and Valeria

A day in the industrial part of the City

This morning we woke up earlier than the others days because our ferry-boat live for Rio de Janeiro downtown at 8.40 a.m.
After crossing the bay we decided to reach Sebrae by foot to have the chance of living the crowded streets of Rio.
Arrived to Sebrae they welcomed us very well.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_NDc4i8qXtjY/S1-rwW7F-aI/AAAAAAAAAHo/sQbyCLzlYjE/s320/P1261960.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5431248522907613602" />

Sebrae is a national brazilian company without any lucrative pourpose, that supports micro (up to 9 workers) and small(up to 19 employers) enterprises operating in the industrial and economic sectors.
Micro and small enterprises rappresent the 98.5% of brazilian market.
At the end of the conference they gave us many books about brazilian economy.
After that we had lunch in a very chic restaurant. Motivated as usual, we start our new day with the first lesson about telecomunication in Brazil. We had a very interesting lecture with professor Carlos Alberto Malicher Vastos. We had an overview of the evolution of telephone, internet, wireless and mobile and fix phone. It was interesting because we didn't know anything about this object even if it is an important part of our daily life.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_NDc4i8qXtjY/S15bg5mGTsI/AAAAAAAAAGg/T0zqGZqNRUo/s320/P1251949.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430878821429956290" />

At 12 pm we went to one of the most modern and industrial area in Rio de Janeiro and then we had lunch in a very nice restaurant called "Ecclettico". In the afternoon we visited the wonderful and technological offices of TIM (Telecom Italia Mobile in Brazil). Tim arrived in Brazil in 1997 and the chief of marketing explained us the path and the growth of this company in the last 12 years. Nowadays Tim represents the third telecomunication company in Brazil with about 40 millions customers. At 4.30 pm we had an appointment in the monitoring room ( network management center NMC) in order to admire the incredible IT system. There were a lot of monitor to check performance, traffic and the quality of service.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_NDc4i8qXtjY/S15b5uPy3WI/AAAAAAAAAGo/HnRLmqjk_TA/s320/P1251947.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430879247880346978" />

At 6.00 pm storm arrived, as usual, and we came back to Niteròi!
It was a very intensive day because it finished with a work for thursday.

Good night and see you tomorrow at 8.00 am !!!!!!

Luca&Marta

Our weekend in Brazil!

After a long and hard week of lessons, homework and visits, we had a fantastic week end, our first brazilian one.
All of us were so happy about that and full of enthusiasm. We really wanted to have some time to the beach and we planned to go to the most famous beach of Rio de Janeiro: Copacabana. We reached the beach at about 12 in the morning all brave and happy for the sun that was not supposed to be that day. We enjoyed so much the time there but we didn’t care enough about the strong tropical sun of Rio and after a couple of hours all of us were looking for some shelters under the palms.
Then we decided to go to one of the most famous attractions of Rio de Janeiro: Pan de Azucar.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_NDc4i8qXtjY/S15jV1CN9QI/AAAAAAAAAHI/w8YTzn2IlGs/s320/P1231840.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430887427320182018" />
The view was amazing, and we realized how big this city is…. Incredible!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_NDc4i8qXtjY/S15lvMegjjI/AAAAAAAAAHQ/FXXNlGFookQ/s320/P1231837.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430890062132842034" />
Our Sunday, instead, was dedicated to the shopping and the special location for it was the hippie market at Ipanema beach. We spent there about two hours; there were so many things to see and we noticed that we like spending reais for souvenirs.
A pit stop at Ipanema beach were just few of us, the brave ones, decided to lay under the sun another bit.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_NDc4i8qXtjY/S15iUumhzRI/AAAAAAAAAG4/8xp_WF31hJ8/s320/P1241893.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430886308901932306" />At about 5 pm we took for the first time the metro of Rio to reach Santa Teresa where we took a nice train full of people, holding themselves even outside, to go up towards the nice quartier. The journey was nice, we saw a party in a square, pubs, shops, bars and wonderful colonial houses with a beautiful sight of Rio.

We really had a fantastic week end, we got home tired, burned by the sun but really really happy. It was important for us because we discovered more things about Brazilian lifestyle, that we can understand not only from the interesting university lessons we are having but also through the personal participation in it.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_NDc4i8qXtjY/S15i4zFkdOI/AAAAAAAAAHA/QQpWCKf862w/s320/P1241904.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430886928581162210" />

Anna&Federica

venerdì 22 gennaio 2010

Our first brasilian weekend begins...

Yesterday morning the breakfast room was empty and this was the consequence of too much food the night before.... The savory and abound meat's dishes and also some delicious pieces of sushi e sashimi, had interfered with the sleep of someone. Our suggest for future turists in Brazil is therefore to be aware when,during their trip, they will discover several restaurants where is possible eat a lot of dishes of meat with fix prize...
Anyway, at 9 we were in our class ready for daily lectures that was about the Brazilian legal system; professor Alexandre Veronese explained us the long process to reach their new legal model throught the new constitution and the difference compared to the italian legal model. It was interesting even if our minds were concentrated on our first friday night.
To have lunch we went another time to eat kilos food in a very fast way because we had an appointment at the technological park in Rio. It was a great surprise have visited this biggest area and have discussed with a manager about the importance of that structure and about how they try to improve development of the brazilian enterprises. Then he showed us two firms that work inside the park and we had compared the different work environment, even if technological and advanced, with italian firms. After that we came back to our hotel to change dress and get ready for the night!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_NDc4i8qXtjY/S15hWUuZgfI/AAAAAAAAAGw/S6oz74UVfXM/s320/P1231790.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430885236803731954" />

Unfortunately weather changed suddenly and we have been blocked hours in the bus before reaching the destination: was very difficult drive under the rain, in the traffic, and with some streets totally flood. Anyway someone was able to gladden everyone with discourses about men and lovely relationship and was funny see the strong female coalition (we were only two men...uff). The place where we had dinner was very particular in terms of interior decoration and after ordered a little bit of "light food" we began to dance samba ( o better we tried to dance...) thanks to live samba group and singer until we decided to come back.
At the beginnig our program was very different but an intensive week, tiredness and some upsets stomach convinced us to desert strongest entertaiment intentions. It was only our fifth day and Brasil has in store surprises for us!

BOA NOITE and stay tuned

Luca&Gessica

A Day in Niteroi

The day begin as usually but not for everybody...room 104 is without water and with 30 degrees outside is a really good condition!

At 9 am, punctual as usual , we assist at the lesson in UFF with professor Marc Aurelio Cabral Pinto who explaines to us the historical path of Brasil from XV century until now. The professor is really passionate about the subject and he trasmits this feeling to us.
At lunch time we experience again the "PESOU PRATO" and after eating kilos of food (fried chicken, farofa, fajoada...) we sunbath before start another lesson.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 350px; height: 250px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_NDc4i8qXtjY/S1kQwa9tgQI/AAAAAAAAAGI/rasbeZjUNd4/s400/P1211687.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5429389249829765378" />
Professor Maria Helena shows the importance of patents and how the intellectual property is fundamental for the development of a country; the three houres go by very quickly thanks to the italian explanation and the huge amount of questions.
The time of the duty finishes at 5.30pm and the free time takes over...walking from the hotel to Sao Francisco area we can see the amazing view , in particular Cristo Rendentor, Pao de Sucar , the Museum of Moder Art and the undulating profile of Rio de Janeiro.

<img style="float:center; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 220px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_NDc4i8qXtjY/S1kTqzGbWZI/AAAAAAAAAGY/e2S0aRjIiLg/s400/P1221721.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5429392451764443538" />
Finally we arrive at the restaurant, Porçao is waiting for us with all kinds of culinary delights all accompanied with caipirinha and mojito!!!
Today we also say goodbye to Valentina and we welcome Silvio Troisi.
Keep in touch , beijos from Niteroi

BOA NOITE A TODOS

Marta & Federica

From the shipyard to the beach!!!

Today we woke up with a shining sun, no clouds, no wind, and no more tropical rain...!!!!
We love Brazil!
The lesson of this morning was about the Brazilian pharmaceutical system of innovation. We were a little bit sleepy because of the few hours of sleeping (we are very diligent students and we do our homeworks at night!), but the interesting lesson gave us the possibility of learning something new about the pharmaceutical field... Brazilian companies are specialized in the production of general drugs, we didn't know it but thanks to the knowledge and the kindness of professor Julia Paranhos even today we have enrich our awareness about Brazilian economy.
So it's arrived the time of launch!!! Finally we tried the typical Brazilian way of launch. So there is a buffet where you can take every thing you want and then they weight your full dish, and at the end you pay refer to the weight. Brazilian food is really very good!!!
After launch we have taken our bus and reached Technolabor in Sao Gonçalo.
It's a company specialized in the production of steel products for the oil and gas, refinery, nuclear and naval industries. Its main customer is Petrobras, the second petroleum company in Latin America and the fifth mondial strenght. They offered us something good to eat and to drink ( typical Brazilian fruit juices which are very tasty!!!) After that they showed us a power point presentation about the company; it was like a lesson where they let us understand the functioning of such an important production. Than they led us trough a direct visit of the shipyard.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_NDc4i8qXtjY/S1-eW-xMD9I/AAAAAAAAAHY/nxRk8rnxdjI/s320/P1201642.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5431233793275727826" />

It was very hot and what was impressing is that workers were able to work standing the suffocating hot.
At the end we deserved a dip in the sea and a wonderful sunset on the beach of Niteroi!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_NDc4i8qXtjY/S1-fcP1QbfI/AAAAAAAAAHg/jvcNuS26G2A/s320/P1201683.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5431234983267167730" />

Gessica e Ivana

A really really full day!!!

We started at 9 with a very interactive lesson about a general overview on the brazilian economy. Professor Paulo Pfeil clearly explained us the main strenghts and weaknesses of this enormous country. First of all he gave us some numbers, comparing Brasil to other countries and in particular to Italy.
He analysed the big deal of brazilian economy, the inflaction, showing us the different governative politics, which tried and try to solve the problem, with quite good results. We discover also that 20% of brazilian population has an italian ancient, due to the migration between the XIX and the XX century.

After the lesson we came out under the tropical sun and we reached the restaurant just behind the Uff University, theatre of a hilarious misunderstanding... we tried to ask for some bread...but the waiters didn´t speak english...so we tried to pronouciate the word in portuguese, that is pão. The waiters were shocked! Actually we pronounced pão as pau! We leave you the burden of translation...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_NDc4i8qXtjY/S1Z017-8wFI/AAAAAAAAAFo/rr-tpXPnvko/s400/P1191533.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5428654870825320530" />

In the afternoon we visited the Judicial Cultural Centre, where we could see the old room of the Brazilian Supreme Court. As it was explained to us, in fact, despite the chance of leaving the favela some might have, actually only a few people do. The majority prefers to stay in the favela because of the spirit of aggregation and pride we said before. Moreover one also has to consider the difficulties and obstacles of moving out for someone who has always lived in a place like this.
The protection given by the favela itself balances the problems of living in it, though; it is for these reasons that the favela tries to grow again from its ashes by creating education opportunities and support institutions. It is on this optic that we believe that the best image of the favela is provided by all the great works hand-made by the mothers of the Kindergarden, all created by garbage, old tools and recycled items. We believe in fact that in order to achieve a great and complete rebirth of the favela, people living in it must not forget or deny their origins but build on them their future.

Valeria and Livia

Fighting poverty in emerging markets - The gloves go on

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 256px; height: 280px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_NDc4i8qXtjY/Sxf-bK-IcxI/AAAAAAAAAFg/tsdemS7YgO4/s320/CIR551.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5411073220063818514" />
Nov 26th 2009
From The Economist print edition

Lessons from Brazil, China and India

AT THE recent food summit in Rome, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva donned a pair of bright-red boxing gloves labelled “Hunger Free” and waved to the cameras. They were his prize—if that is the right term—for Brazil’s success in topping a league table drawn up by ActionAid, a British charity, of countries that have done most to reduce hunger*. The occasion was a stunt, of course, but had a serious purpose: to show that even the poorest places can mitigate poverty and hunger. (Brazil is not in that category, but Ghana, Vietnam and Malawi—which came third, fourth and fifth—are.)

ActionAid’s list was inevitably influenced by the sort of things that NGOs love: social-protection programmes, constitutional and legal guarantees against poverty, the rejection of free markets. But now comes a more rigorous assessment of poverty-reduction in Brazil, China and India by Martin Ravallion, the director of the World Bank’s Development Research Group†. It also suggests that hunger is not simply something that growth will take care of. Mr Ravallion shows that the performance of the giants varies a lot more than their growth. And he too regards Brazil’s performance as exceptional.

Between them, Brazil, China and India account for half the world’s poorest people and an even bigger share of those who have escaped poverty. In 1981, 84% of China’s population was below the poverty line of $1.25 a day (in 2005 prices); in 2005 the share was just 16% (see chart). This amounted to a 6.6% proportionate annual rate of poverty reduction—the difference between the growth rates of the number of poor and the total population.

Nobody did as well as China. Brazil’s share of those in poverty fell by half from 17% to 8%, an annual reduction of 3.2%. India did least well, cutting the share below the poverty line from 60% to 42% between 1981 and 2005. This implies an annual reduction of 1.5% a year, though there are problems with Indian statistics; using different consumption figures yields an annual reduction of 3%, comparable to Brazil’s.

As Mr Ravallion points out, these figures do not mirror growth rates. Brazil cut poverty by more than India despite much lower growth, just over 1% a year in 1993-2005, compared with India’s 5%. If you calculate the rate of poverty reduction for each unit of GDP growth per person, Brazil did even better than China: the ratio is 4.3 for Brazil, 0.8 for China and 0.4 for India (0.8 if you use the adjusted consumption figures). Per unit of growth, Brazil reduced its proportional poverty rate five times more than China or India did.

How did it do so well? The main explanation has to do with inequality. This (as measured by the Gini index, also marked on the chart) has fallen sharply in Brazil since 1993, while it has soared in China and risen in India. Greater inequality dampens the poverty-reducing effect of growth.

Government policy played a big role in reducing inequality. Brazil’s main cash-transfer programme, called Bolsa Familia, provides help to 11m families, or 60% of all those in the poorest tenth. In contrast, social security in China is still provided largely through the enterprise system (ie, companies), so it tends to bypass those not in work. And government interventions in India are extraordinarily perverse. People in the poorest fifth are the least likely to have any kind of ration card (the key to public handouts), whereas the richest fifth are the most likely to.

Mr Ravallion concludes with some useful lessons. In all three countries, economic stability made a big difference for the better. China cut poverty the most, but did best early on, when agriculture was growing fastest. As growth shifted towards the cities and manufacturing, inequality rose. It might have done even better with Brazilian-style “progressive” policies. India had both growth and social policies, yet did worst because its policies in fact did rather little to help the poor. With its caste system, and bad state schools, India may be a more unequal society than the numbers alone suggest. Both Asian countries could learn some lessons from Brazil. But Brazil, in turn, will not be able to match China’s record in reducing the number of poor people without higher growth.

(in totale 35 ragazzi)

Il gruppo dei partecipanti ha visto:
- 26 femmine
- 9 maschi

Alcuni ragazzi presenti avevano già partecipato a precedenti edizioni della Summer School in India e sono interessati all'iniziativa;
